Don's Gear List (1/12/97)
The list is in four sections.  The first is basic gear.  The second is group or community gear.  If going alone, or in very small group, some is still necessary. .  The third is "Day Pack."    These are personal safety and comfort items.  They mostly fit into a large kitchen baggie.  Some are essential.  Some are optional.  All are useful.  The fourth is a combination of neccessary and optional personal items.  In all areas below are several optional items.  The decision as to which are optional and which are necessary depends on the type of trip, the season, and expected conditions.

BASIC GEAR

  Sleeping

____ Sleeping bag(5 F or colder, nylon shell, not down fill, preferably three season bag) 5 lbs or less
____ ground cloth (Sheet of plastic),5' X 7'
____ pillow
____ pad(therm-A-rest or closed-cell foam)
____ chair conversion kit

  Footwear

____ 4 pr. wool or wick dry socks (stay warm when wet)
____ 2 pr. sock liners (prevent blisters)
____ Medium weight hiking boots
____ sandals
____ gaiters

  Clothing

____ Swimsuit
____ wicking layer-long underwear
____ 2 insulator layers
____ T-shirt
____ shorts (quick dry nylon recommended)
____ 4 under garments
____ wind layer(a nylon windproof shell)
____ rain layer(Caqoule, Anoraks, pants all waterproof)

  Head and Hands

____ gloves or mittens(Wool with a nylon shell Waterproof)
____ wool cap or balaclava
____ sun hat

  Backpack

____ int or ext frame minimum 4800 cu in 25% body wt.
____ pack cover
